We utilize targeted play and cognitive restructuring as a medium for understanding and communication with your child with the aim of improving communication and understanding between you and your child. Cognitive restructuring is based on the concept that our thoughts cause our feelings and behaviors and not external things like people, environments and events. The benefit of this fact is that we can change the way we think to feel/act better even if the circumstance does not change.
Living Skills offers individual and family counseling to help children and families who are experiencing a range of issues–from adjusting to recent stress to coping with on-going and complex developmental problems. We incorporate evidence-based, cognitive-behavioral principles into all facets of treatment. Often, we collaborate with caregivers and children by teaching evidence-based cognitive and behavioral coping skills as well as building and supporting efforts at home.
We can help your child learn to cope with a variety of behavioral/emotional issues including:
- impulse control
- temper tantrums
- aggressive behavior
- noncompliant behavior
- difficulty sleeping and/or nightmares
- difficulty maintaining positive relationships
- anger management
- social communication
